Gianmarco, a "giovanotto" (young man) from Milan, attempts to make a living in the world of journalism. Unexpectedly, he finds himself catapulted to Tuscany, in the town of Castiglion Fiorentino, to cover a report on the Palio dei rioni - an event, a popular ritual, or a historical re-enactment, depending on one's perspective - which is a horse race competition. More simply, it is a horse race.
Entirely unfamiliar with the environment and initially disoriented by the arcane rituals of the community, one of the "many small Sienese towns," Gianmarco, accompanied by the photographer Caterina, makes contact with the residents of one of the three neighborhoods, Porta Romana, who are living through the nerve-wracking anticipation of the Palio. He observes their gestures, their stories, and their emotions.
It is from this "other" perspective, away from the spotlights, that the aspiring journalist discovers a new world - one of stables revered as religious places, jockeys elevated to epic heroes, deafening choirs echoing through the alleys, thunderous drums, period costumes and armor, sleepless nights, and fragrant dawns.
